NetRead’s JacketCaster has supported ONIX 3.0 since 2009, but United States retailers were slow to adopt the upgrade. In the last year and a half, Amazon has upgraded their ONIX ingestion system and they’ve been migrating publishers to ONIX 3.0 (from the current 2.1). They expect everyone to complete the migration by Dec 31, 2020.
We meet weekly with Amazon, and we’ve migrated nearly every publishing client. So what are the advantages:
1. Better data ingestion by Amazon
2. To some degree, an expanded data set
3. Synchronizing with the rest of the world and leaving old versions behind, i.e. Support for just one ONIX version
4. Amazon will now allow Advantage publishers to use ONIX, though title registration and pricing changes are still required through the Advantage portal
Given the time it’s taken to move the United States forward with this standard, we believe this will be the final upgrade. Ingram and Barnes & Noble are also file testing for migration.
